In 2005 an extremely successful refraction
programme was undertaken in Antsirabe. Head teachers were taught to
screen their pupils for visual acuity problems. A staggering 65,000
school children and teachers were screened for their need for
glasses. It was found that 2,000 children and 1,000 teachers needed
spectacles. If you wear glasses you will understand the visual
problems you have when not wearing your glasses.
We plan to replicate this project in
Fianarantsoa – the second largest town in Madagascar. This is fully
in keeping with WHO Vision 2020 priorities. Teachers and school
directors will be trained in Visual acuity screening as well as
basic eye disease. Children aged 10 – 15 will be of priority as this
is the group that is taking examinations. Those who have vision
below that which is expected will be seen in the eye camps and
glasses and medication given if required. The service will be fully
audited. An Autorefractor will provide accurate refraction.
MOSS has kindly received a grant of £10,000 to
cover this project.
